13) Analysis of results (Reasons for upward and downward swing of result):

The Three Year Degree Course was (2+1) Pattern up to 2004, from 2005 up to 2010 course was (1+ 1 + 1) pattern, from 2011onwards the pattern is Semester pattern and from 2019 the course was in CBCS pattern. The analysis of result shows that there is an upward and down ward trend of result in Part-I and Part-II Major and General course Examinations. But in the Part-III (Final) Examination the result is almost stable. In the semester system the result is upward.. In the Part-III (Final) and semester examination pass percentage is 100 per cent in all the examinations except in the year 2003. From 2001 to 2004 the pass percentage in Part-II final examination was slightly above 80 per cent. From 2015 to 2023 the result has been satisfactory. In 2015, 2016 and 2020 all the students got first class position in B.A. final examination under G. U. In the year 2020 one student named Parthapratim Barman in semester pattern secured in first class third position in Arts stream under G. U. It is very discouraging that till we are not success to produce any first class in the department; however, we are trying our best for the same. It is seen that only a few student in the department comes to TDC first year with first division in H.S. level and most of the students comes with poor academic result. There is a strong believe in the students community that economics is a difficult subject. It is true that present curriculum of economics (both Major/Hon and General/Regular) incorporates mathematics and statistics. Those students who do not have mathematical background in H.S. level found it difficult to follow the syllabus of degree level. Again most of the students in H.S. (Arts) level follow assamese medium. But the medium of teaching in the degree major subject is English and it is observed that immediate change of medium from assamese to English put some adverse effect on the result of Part-I and First semester. Another challenge is lack of basic foundation of Mathematics which is essential to-day for Economics subject, basically in Honours course. These may be the reasons that we get only few students in both major/Hon and pass/regular courses. Another reason for down ward trend of result is that most of the students are not regular in attending their classes. Lack of seminar, symposia, debate competition etc may be the reason of downward result of the department.

13)            Suggestions for improvement

To improve the academic result the faculty members of the department believes that measures should be taken to attract meritorious student to the college, in general, to Economics department. Students with Mathematics in the H.S. Level should be allowed to take Economics Major. The traditional method of teaching must be changed and new innovative technique should be incorporated in teaching-learning method. Another important subject to be included in Economics Major Course in degree level is Computer (Basic). Because to-day Computer application is a necessary part in Economics studies. It is expected the change in the teaching learning method like using audio visual technique, unit test per week, discussion with the help of Google Class Room, etc will help the students to develop him/her and show good result. Again the minimum attendance should be mandatory in the classes. Faculty members of the department should organize seminar, symposium etc to motivate the students and to eliminate the fear on the economics subject.
